Create Quality Environments
Creating a quality environment enhances productivity, performance, customer satisfaction, and brand image
Quality environments allow occupants to be more productive, and enhance the appeal and marketability of the buildings themselves. Studies show that comfortable, well-ventilated, well-lit, safe workplaces increase productivity as much as 16 percent and job satisfaction as much as 24 percent, while reducing absenteeism.
At Johnson Controls’ corporate headquarters, in Glendale, Wisconsin, improvements such as solar thermal systems, high-efficiency skylights and windows, low-flow plumbing, and the Metasys® building automation system have earned the campus distinction as having the highest concentration of LEED® Platinum buildings on one site. And, as a result of an enhanced work environment, employees are even more engaged.
What’s true for workplaces is also true for schools. In a higher-quality environment, students perform better, score higher on standardized tests, and miss fewer school days. At colleges and universities, a quality campus environment provides a place students enjoy living and learning. That’s important because two-thirds of college students select their college or university based on curb appeal. It’s also a powerful tool for attracting and retaining an excellent faculty.
For example, as a result of a broad range of energy and water conservation measures, the University of Massachusetts Amherst realized savings that enabled it to reduce a deferred maintenance backlog and invest in campus improvements to enhance its reputation for academic excellence.
Houghton-Portage Township Schools in Houghton, Michigan implemented a comprehensive multi-year project to transform its classrooms and buildings into superior learning environments. Savings from energy efficiency upgrades helped offset the cost of the project, and the district gained public support for a bond referendum that provided additional needed funding.
How to create quality environments
Here are some of the many solutions you can implement to improve your facility for its occupants:
- by replacing outdated equipment and installing state-of-the-art heating and cooling systems and controls, you can maximize comfort while minimizing energy and water consumption and costs.
- by implementing the latest lighting technologies, you can create welcoming, appealing, safe interior spaces and outdoor areas.
- by deploying state-of-the-art security systems for access control and video surveillance, you can better protect employees and visitors, as well as valuable building assets.
- you can maximize efficiency, creating a comfortable and safe building, by utilizing the Johnson Controls Metasys® building management system to control and integrate key mechanical and electrical building systems.
And the good news is facility improvements that create quality environments are often funded by the resulting energy and operational savings.
