The not-for-profit Parrish Medical Center (PMC) hospital has been serving the North Brevard County, Florida area with excellent medical care since 1958. Throughout that time, its leaders have come to believe that a healthcare facility's physical environment can be a significant factor in patient care. They're right. Ample research exists to support the concept that environments play a key role in healing the body as well as the spirit. PMC wanted its new outpatient facility, the Parrish Healthcare Center at Port St. John, Florida, to offer just such an environment – one that would be designed and constructed to offer the best possible patient healing experience. To do so, everything about the facility – its interior and exterior -- would have to be healthy, bright, peaceful and welcoming. The building and the grounds would have to be efficient and sustainable. Many of the attributes of a highly effective healing center dovetail with the requirements for achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. The process for attaining that certification, however, required extensive evaluation of options and coordination. In short, PMC needed a knowledgeable and expert partner to help.

The solution: Collaboration with Johnson Controls

Johnson Controls collaborated with the management and staff of PMC and with the design and construction team. That collaboration began with a workshop that Johnson Controls conducted to obtain input from executive management; senior staff from facilities, planning, information technology and clinical services; and the architectural firm. Using that input, the group could come up with the best ways to cost effectively implement and integrate the most appropriate and effective systems and technologies to help PMC reach its goals for the outpatient facility.

As a LEED-accredited organization and as the project manager, Johnson Controls was able to guide the project team on how to meet LEED objectives requirements and achieve energy and operational savings for the lifecycle of the new facility. Using our processes and software tools, Johnson Controls was able to help PMC maximize the opportunities to receive LEED points. As for the new facility itself, a number of energy saving and water conservation systems were put in place, including:

  • High-efficiency lighting with occupancy and daylighting sensors
  • High-efficiency HVAC systems
  • The Johnson Controls Metasys® building management system to achieve maximum comfort and efficiency as well as maintaining indoor air quality
  • Low-flow plumbing fixtures to reduce water usage
  • Rain water traps for irrigation to further reduce water usage
  • Reflective roofing materials to reduce heat gain

Johnson Controls also installed its state-of-the art P2000 security system to protect patients, visitors and staff. Speaking of the staff, Johnson Controls implemented an education and communications program on sustainable energy to help employees have a better understanding of actions they could take at home and work.

Results and benefits

The new facility has become the first healthcare outpatient building in the State of Florida to earn LEED Silver certification by virtue of meeting all the certification requirements and becoming an efficiently performing and sustainable building that will benefit patients, staff, the surrounding community, and the environment for a long time to come.
